Clipper

Hey HN! I've built clipper.dev - the fastest container repository in the world. (Big claim, I know.) It deduplicates at a file/chunk level, rather than at the layer level. I get around 10-20% faster pulls than docker (when using containerd for both) for fresh pulls. For some workflows, I see 80-90% faster patch pulls (think v0.17.5 -> 0.17.6). Here's a best case scenario for me (and worst case for dockerhub) docker> time sudo nerdctl pull ollama/ollama:0.17.5 docker.io/ollama/ollama:0.17.5: elapsed: 244.1s total: 2.9 Gi (12.3 MiB/s) real 4m4.172s user 0m0.115s sys…

What it does

Clipper is a container registry that does file-level deduplication across layers and across images. By ditching tarballs, we get up to 10x faster pulls and 7x faster builds. Clipper is drop-in compatible with your existing container workflows: ull with the Clipper client, get standard OCI images on disk. Same workflow, dramatically less data stored and transferred. Compatible with Docker, Kubernetes, Podman, containerd, AppImage/sif, and others.

Container registry with chunk-based distribution

Chunk-level deduplication across layers, tags, and repos. Reuse the data you already have, only transfer what's new. Clipper reuses the data your device already has on it. Adding a single dependency or changing a few lines of Python is no problem. Ever tried to pull a large image over cell service on a farm? DSL in a warehouse? It could take hours. Clipper does what Docker can't. Pulled images can be run by docker , podman , and containerd with no modification. Clipper handles chunking and dedup transparently. Local chunk cache on every device. Pulls skip bytes already on disk. CUDA runtimes, model weights, datasets. Purpose-built for the images Docker wasn't designedfrom clipper.dev

We kept hitting the same wall: you clone some arbitrary repo and just want it to run without any configuration work. So we built Keystone, an open source tool that spins up a Modal sandbox, runs Claude Code inside it, and produces a working .devcontainer/ config (Dockerfile, devcontainer.json, test runner) for any git repo. We build on the dev container standard, so the output works with VS Code and GitHub Codespaces out of the box. Main use cases: reproducible dev/CI environments, self-describing repos, and safely sandboxed coding agents. Our goal is to encourage all repos to…

  • Nix Snapshotter – Native understanding of Nix packages for containerd2023 · github.com · ▲145

Hello! This is Edgar and Robbie and we built nix-snapshotter. nix-snapshotter brings native understanding of Nix packages to containerd. We built this because Nix is a great fit for making efficient containers. They don't need an OS because Nix captures all dependencies exactly. However, the current process of creating Nix images is subpar because one needs to transform Nix packages into a format that container runtimes understand. Using nix-snapshotter, instead of downloading image layers, packages come directly from the Nix store. Packages can be fetched from a binary cache or built on the…

  • Building better base images2025 · github.com · ▲38

This project addresses the inefficiencies of traditional Dockerfile-based container builds where each customization layer creates storage bloat through duplicate dependencies from repeated apt-get install commands, network inefficiency from redundant package downloads across different images, and slow iteration cycles requiring full rebuilds of all previous steps. Our solution enables building minimal base images from scratch using debootstrap that precisely include only required components in the initial build, while allowing creation of specialized variants (Java, Kafka, etc.) from these…

Docker pulls more than it needs to - and how we can fix itMar 2026 · dockerpull.com · ▲8

Hi all! I've built a small tool to visualize how inefficient `docker pull` is, in preparation for standing up a new Docker registry + transport. It's bugged me for a while that updating one dependency with Docker drags along many other changes. It's a huge problem with Docker+robotics. With dozens or hundreds of dependencies, there's no "right" way to organize the layers that doesn't end up invalidating a bunch of layers on a single dependency update - and this is ignoring things like compiled code, embedded ML weights, etc. Even worse, many robotics deployments are on terrible internet,…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but…

Over the past few months, our team has been building more and more slidedecks using web frontend technologies with coding harnesses like Claude Code, but a common complaint is to make even small edits we need to edit the code either manually or via the harness. To avoid this loop, I ended up creating Bento, a single HTML file with everything you need in a slide tool including animations and shared editing. There's no install or cloud login, everything works offline. The default deck is around 560 KB and it doesn't need to fetch anything once you got it. Open it in a browser and then you can…

  • A few days ago I found myself trying out GLM 5.2 and was really positively impressed. The capabilities and security I was getting from this LLM are similar to those I've gotten from models like Claude or GPT, and this really surprised me. But then I thought, "I wonder how it would work on a normal computer like mine," and above all, "I wonder if it would work without going into OOM on a computer like mine." So I started working with the help of agents to test this possibility. I started converting the model to int4, understanding MTP usage, and if possible implementing DSA for long context.…

Hello! For the last 2 months, I've been building OpenSEO. It's a user friendly UI wrapping the DataForSEO API which has high quality SEO data for keywords, backlinks, AI SEO and competitor research. Instead of paying $100+ per month, you buy DataForSEO credits and pay only for usage. The coolest thing about the project so far has been hearing about what people are building on top of it. People are using coding agents to quickly integrate with Google Search Console, Google Ads and building their own AI SEO and reporting features. Many were already building their own custom solutions around…
