CuckooTimer
Hey HN, I made this tool to help me be mindful of time while at my computer. Plus, I always wanted a cuckoo clock and this app gives a similar feel. I tried using traditional productivity timers like Pomodoro timers, but I was never consistent with starting them or restarting them after breaks. CuckooTimer is macOS menu bar app that gives you a gentle ping every hour (or whatever interval you choose) so you can be more aware of time passing. It quickly fades onto the screen as a borderless 3D cuckoo clock, a cute cuckoo bird animates out, makes a real bird call, then fades away. I use it as…

my new app Timebar has a clever UI (I think)2013 · whimsicalifornia.com · ▲81Howdy, gang; After almost two weeks of sitting in Apple's approval queue, my new app Timebar is finally available. I think it has a pretty innovative UI feature, so I wanted to float it by Hacker News. It's a timer app that turns your Mac's menu bar into a sort of virtual hourglass. Your menu bar starts out tinted blue (or whatever colour you pick) and it slowly drains from right-to-left until your time is up. It works very well for situations where you want to keep track of time, but don't need to be super precise. The menu bar is easy to glance up at, and it doesn't take long to happen…

I made a built-from scratch Wayland Compositor to display any GUI app* in the terminal! I think there is a lot of unexplored potential in custom Wayland compositors, a lot of really cool things you can embed existing applications into! So, I started with embedding apps into the terminal because that is the easiest input/output (output is just utf-8 and I use the great `chafa` library for that, and I just read from stdin for the input). If you have any other ideas for cool Wayland compositors, let me know. I purposedly wrote 80% the app in Typescript to appeal to the most developers and…

Years ago I stumbled across a basic version of this concept and it stuck with me. I knew if I was ever going to take on such a project, it would need to be flawless, but without coding experience it was just another idea that would never happen. By the end of 2024, as AI coding tools exploded everywhere, I finally had a way to make it real. I started from zero knowledge and spent months collaborating with AI agents as a learning experience. Every pixel and every function went through me. The AI translated what I asked for into code, but every decision was human. I didn't use existing OS…
