Dut – a fast Linux disk usage calculator2024 · codeberg.org · ▲396"dut" is a disk usage calculator that I wrote a couple months ago in C. It is multi-threaded, making it one of the fastest such programs. It beats normal "du" in all cases, and beats all other similar programs when Linux's caches are warm (so, not on the first run). I wrote "dut" as a challenge to beat similar programs that I used a lot, namely pdu[1] and dust[2]. "dut" displays a tree of the biggest things under your current directory, and it also shows the size of hard-links under each directory as well. The hard-link tallying was inspired by ncdu[3], but I don't like how unintuitive the…

Hi HN folks, Deep here. I am a design engineer and I have been building Resurf for the past 4 months. Resurf is a local first Mac app for quickly capturing notes, thoughts, ideas, inspiration, links, and files like PDFs and images without switching context. As a design engineer who cares a lot about craft, I built resurf because my “stuff I want to keep” was scattered across tabs, different apps, notes, screenshots, random folders, and I kept losing good references. A lot of tools exist, but I wanted something calm + polished that feels native on Mac (not another file manager). with Resurf…

Hello, HN - I wanted to share this puzzle game I made during my vacation. I'm rather fond of the pipes puzzle where your goal is to restore a scrambled network of connections by rotating tiles. It's usually played on a grid of squares and this all started when I decided to make a programmatic solver for that kind of puzzle. Then I realized that with some minor changes the solver could generate new puzzle instances. I thought about what kind of puzzle to make and someone suggested a hexagonal grid. Adapting the generator wasn't too hard but then I had to create a way to play this variant. So…

We're building Parsnip to create a "tech tree" of cooking skills that allows anyone to level up on the building blocks of cooking knowledge while tracking their progress over time. It took us a few iterations to figure out the right product; here's the story of our latest pivot: [https://parsnip.substack.com/p/a-new-hope] The goal is to create a personalized way to learn any recipe on the Internet, then use this as a springboard to help home cooks of all levels solve the problem of repeated meal planning in a 10x better way:…
