Effort to clone unmaintained SourceForge projects to GitHub

SourceForge mirror of some projects

Effort to clone unmaintained SourceForge projects to GitHub launched on June 27, 2015 with 146 votes, #174 of 3,954 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 11 years on.

In plain words

This project preserves unmaintained open source software by mirroring abandoned SourceForge projects to GitHub. It addresses concerns that valuable but orphaned projects could be lost if SourceForge declines or removes inactive repositories. The initiative rescues code from a platform increasingly known for aggressive advertising and bundled adware, transferring it to GitHub as a more stable, community-focused hosting alternative. It is designed for developers and open source communities seeking to protect legacy software.

From the sources

SourceForge is dying. As it’s not anymore the most popular platform of choice for hosting open source projects, SourceForge started reacting very badly by adding shady ads to its site, and even mangles the downloads of the hosted projects by adding unsollicited adware, without a warning. See Ars Technica for a detailed description. A number of projects have moved away from sourceforge after this. However, a lot of good projects may have lost their maintainer, and these projects may risk being lost if SourceForge dies or purges projects it judges “non-profitable”. On the other hand, GitHub is a saner and healthier alternative for hosting these projects. ASFMirror is a collection of mirrors…from a-sf-mirror.github.io

Several months ago, I built a "stealth" feature that I could use. It hasn't been advertised, and I've been the only user. As I find it useful for myself, I believe others (software developers) may like it too. So, this is the first public post about it, and if it gets any positive feedback, I may put some time into promoting it more. In essence, given that you've opened a GitHub repo (there are ~225k of the more popular ones indexed as of now), you can replace "github" with "libhunt" within the URL, and you will find the top alternatives and related projects. For example, here are three…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
