What it does
Most focus apps compete by adding things. Focusbox does the opposite. One screen holds a countdown timer, a checkable task list, and a plain markdown notes doc, all visible at once with no tabs or modes, no streaks, and no productivity score. It's a local Tauri app: native, small, and fast.
A small focus app: a countdown timer, a task list, and a notes page side by side. Local-first, source-available, and free, with optional encrypted sync.
That's the whole app. Focusbox runs on your own computer, it's free, and the code is open. I built it after Rize started doing too much. free · apple silicon .dmg · windows .exe too · source on github Set how long you want to focus, and the ring empties as the time runs out. When it ends, you can add a few minutes or just stop. It doesn't log the time or score you on it. Type a task, press enter, and check it off when you're done. The header keeps a count of what's left. That's the whole task list. A plain notes page that's always open next to the timer. You get headings, lists, and checkboxes, without a wall of buttons to wade through. More on the timer with notes . Homebrew 6.0.0▲1,481Today, I’m proud to announce Homebrew 6.0.0. The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate). Happy to discuss any questions here!

Hi HN! I was super frustrated at apps like tiktok and wechat preventing me from saving or downloading the animated gifs, so I made a little tool to turn a screen recording into a slack-sized emoji. Hope you get some value from this!
