Frankfurter is an open-source API for querying current and historical foreign exchange rates published by the European Central Bank. A public instance runs on its website. You can also self-host with Heroku or Docker.

Frankfurter tracks daily exchange rates from 98 central banks and official sources , covering 206 currencies back to 1948 . The public API lives at api.frankfurter.dev . It requires no API key. The project is open source, so you can also self-host for full control. Working with an AI agent? Point it at llms.txt , or add the MCP server . Tip: Narrowing down currencies keeps responses small. For large date ranges, request NDJSON to stream results line by line. Downsample a time series with group . Supports week and month . By default, rates are blended across all providers.
