Front and Center
Classic Window Layering for the Mac
Front and Center launched on January 17, 2020 with 72 votes, #537 of 3,486 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 6 years on.
What it does
Front and Center lets you control the window layering policy on your Mac. In "Classic" mode, clicking on a window brings all the windows in that app to the front, just like it did in classic Mac OS. In "Modern" mode, only the clicked window comes to the front.

Nuff said. But I do have a feature request. I am wondering if it is possible to have the window layering policy to be "per-display" for those of us with multiple displays. The idea is that the classic behavior can apply, but it only affects the display where the click event occurred. That way the window layering on other displays is not affected. I love this app when on a single display machine (such as a laptop) but when I am using it on my main setup I find that the "work flow" on my other display is disrupted by windows that I did not intend to be brought to the front on my secondary display. I am not sure if this is possible, but this may be something to look into. Other than that I love…from apps.apple.com

I hacked this project together last weekend, inspired by the Codex Computer-Use release and lessons learned from deploying GUI-operating agents for our customers. The main problem: when a UI automation process controls a desktop app today, it usually takes over the human’s session. Your cursor moves, keyboard focus gets stolen, windows jump to the front, and you have to stop working until the agent is done. That is why we have historically avoided encouraging users to run these processes directly on their host machine, instead relying on VMs or GUI containers…

Hey folks. Last year I was fortunate enough to sign a deal to write a book with my favorite technical publisher, The Pragmatic Bookshelf. When I started out as an Engineering Manager many years ago, I found that there wasn't a huge amount of material that specifically and practically helped me understand how to do my job. When you learn to program there's all of these amazing tutorials, examples and guides, but what was there for new managers? In response to this, a couple of years ago I started a blog over at https://www.theengineeringmanager.com which got a decent amount of…
