Generative art with ant colony optimization algorithms
Generative art with ant colony optimization algorithms launched on January 16, 2020 with 87 votes, #393 of 3,486 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 6 years on.
In plain words
This tool creates visual art using ant colony optimization algorithms, which simulate how ants find efficient paths through their environment. The resulting generative pieces combine mathematical processes with artistic output. It is for people interested in algorithmic art, emergence, and the visual patterns that can arise from simple rule-based systems. The work demonstrates how computer science principles can produce aesthetically interesting results.

I wanted to make a piece of art that explores the complexity of software engineering. When I imagine a huge codebase, I think of its emergent complexity and tangled, inter-connected parts. Its overall shape, if it can be said to have one, emerges from the actions of many individuals. I thought about how to represent this, and one image that resonated with me was that of the ants’ nest. Ants are a perfect example of emergent complexity. No individual ant is an architect, but together, they build beautiful, complicated structures. I started by looking for information about simulating ants’ nests. Apparently there is literature about this, and it’s fascinating . But the trick…from amydyer.art

I built an interactive plotter art exhibit for SIGGRAPH2024 · lostpixels.io · ▲167I'm enthralled with using pen plotters to make generative art. Last August at SIGGRAPH, I built an interactive experience for others to see how code can be used to make visual art. The linked blog post is my trials and tribulations of linking a MIDI controller to one of these algorithms and sending its output to a plotter, so that people may witness the end-to-end experience.
Pixel Art Generator Using Genetic Algorithm2025 · github.com · ▲24This project is a simple but fun demonstration of a genetic algorithm applied to image generation. It starts with a population of random images and evolves them over generations to resemble a target image. The output is an animated GIF that shows the entire evolution process.

Hey folks. Last year I was fortunate enough to sign a deal to write a book with my favorite technical publisher, The Pragmatic Bookshelf. When I started out as an Engineering Manager many years ago, I found that there wasn't a huge amount of material that specifically and practically helped me understand how to do my job. When you learn to program there's all of these amazing tutorials, examples and guides, but what was there for new managers? In response to this, a couple of years ago I started a blog over at https://www.theengineeringmanager.com which got a decent amount of…
