What it does

More and more I’m squashing when I merge my git branches. I’ve been using this at my day job for about a month, and have some thoughts. There’s a problem here: merging by hand means that things can theoretically change between your code in the branch and the code you committed to master. Because git merge --squash dumps all your changes from that branch into your working directory , you can change things at will. This is usually not what you want. Maybe you squashed into a dirty working copy, or somehow deleted a file. You can’t be sure your commit is accurately the code that was in the branch and got reviewed (especially since you did it with -a , which I normally…from rwilcox.tumblr.com

On a recent screen share with our designer at my FT job, I watched as our designer struggled with checking out a repository. It was painful because existing Git clients are confusing and nearly user hostile. Us software engineers are used to Git and terrible UX, but it shouldn't have to be that way. So, I wanted to make something better. Been working on this one for a while now, and while it's still very early stages, it's stable enough that I feel comfortable sharing it with the world :) I wanted a few things to be really easy and clear: - Merging between branches is explained before you do…

Hi Hacker news ! I’m Julien and I built an alternative CLI for Git : gut. Even if I haven’t been coding for a long time (I’m in the first year studying computer science), I’ve always found git to be frustrating. The command naming is inconsistent and git lets you easily shoot yourself in the foot. I made gut, another git porcelain, to solve these issues. It provides a consistent naming of command. To do so, syntax is based on subcommands. For example, to delete a branch, run gut branch rm rather than git branch -d, same to delete a remote (gut remote rm) and so on. Gut also prevents you from…

Hi HN! I made this app out of necessity: sometimes I'll troll over my laptop all day without moving until lunch break or work is done. No good. So I made git hook to block my git commits if I didn't do some calisthenics. Later, after I noticed it was useful, I decided to open it up for others. It works like this: - Download the iOS or Android app - Install the .git hook - Do daily pushups with the app or else your hooks will fail Pushup form is validated via ARKit/MLKit and the accelerometer and I only use github for authentication. If you find it useful, let me know! Justin
