GitQuest

Hey HN, I built Git Quest, it reads your public GitHub history and turns it into an idle RPG character. How it works: - Your most-used language determines your class (TypeScript → Paladin, Python → Sage, etc.) - Commits generate Power and XP - Your character auto-battles dungeons while you code – no active play needed - Enemies drop loot across 5 rarity tiers - Live leaderboard ranks developers It only reads public GitHub data. I built it because I wanted something that rewards coding consistency without being another "streak" tracker. The idle mechanic means prolific coders naturally…

What it does

GitQuest is the first game where developers compete to gain prizes! Each git contribution counts, try to get the highest score and win rewards 🏆

Git Quest is a free developer RPG where your GitHub commits become Mana, your code history builds your character, and your repositories are dungeons. Start your quest now.

Git Quest turns your GitHub history into a living RPG character. Your top language picks your class, your streak fuels your power, your stats automatically battle dungeons while you code. Strict, reliable, principled. They believe type safety is a sacred virtue. Every PR you merged, every bug you squashed, every late-night deploy — they weren't just work. They were training. In the GitVerse, your code has weight. Your consistency has power. That 47-day streak? It's a legendary buff. Those 3,000 commits? They forged a warrior. "Your quest has already begun. You just didn't know it yet." Strict, reliable, principled. They believe type safety is a sacred virtue. 5 rarity tiers. 50 items across…from gitquest.dev

I built this game as a playful way to train code reading skills. You're dropped into a random location in a real GitHub repo where some lines code are hidden. The goal is to pick up clues from the surrounding code and fill in the missing lines as quickly as possible. It currently has curated game content for Python, TypeScript, JavaScript (by most metrics the top 3 languages on GitHub). I had the idea when it dawned on me that reviewing and understanding code spat out by an LLM is a key skill for the AI era. (I sincerely hope you're critically reviewing what your favorite LLM is serving…

On a recent screen share with our designer at my FT job, I watched as our designer struggled with checking out a repository. It was painful because existing Git clients are confusing and nearly user hostile. Us software engineers are used to Git and terrible UX, but it shouldn't have to be that way. So, I wanted to make something better. Been working on this one for a while now, and while it's still very early stages, it's stable enough that I feel comfortable sharing it with the world :) I wanted a few things to be really easy and clear: - Merging between branches is explained before you do…

Hi HN, I built GitRanks because I’ve always wanted a clear, fun way to see how my open-source work compares - both globally and right here at home. The app pulls in GitHub data to give every developer an at-a-glance “scorecard”, then rolls those into live leaderboards so you can: - Track rankings by stars, contributions and followers - Filter worldwide vs. your own country - Refresh daily - no waiting weeks to see your progress - Discover rising devs you’ve never heard of and follow their work Tech Stack: - Back: MongoDB | NestJS | BullMQ | GraphQL - Front: Next.js | Tailwind | Shadcn Data:…

    I turned GitHub contributions into a retro battle game2025 · epicdevbattlesofhistory.com · ▲15

Hey HN, This is a little web game called Epic Dev Battles of History. It takes public GitHub contribution stats (like commit counts, streaks, activity levels) and uses them to simulate a retro arcade-style battle between two profiles. You can enter your GitHub username and challenge a friend or colleague, try the online matchmaking, or pick one of the pre-loaded profiles as an opponent. After the battle, it shows a breakdown of the stats used. It started as a fun side-project to visualize GitHub activity in a different way. You can play it live here:…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I realized that the PDF engines of modern desktop browsers (PDFium and PDF.js) support JavaScript with enough I/O primitives to make a basic game like Tetris. It was a bit tricky to find a union of features that work in both engines, but in the end it turns out that showing/hiding annotation "fields" works well to make monochrome pixels, and keyboard input can be achieved by typing in a text input box. All in all it's quite janky but a nice reminder of how general purpose PDF scripting can be. The linked PDF is all ASCII so you can just open it in a text editor, or have a look at…

I originally built this app to organize and reuse interesting React + Tailwind components I came across on Twitter, inspired by the shadcn/ui approach. Later, a friend started contributing their own components, and it got me thinking—this could grow into something bigger, like an NPM for design engineers to share and use components. Would love to hear your thoughts!
