In plain words

GNU grep as a PHP extension brings the Unix grep command's pattern-matching functionality directly into PHP applications. It's designed for developers who need powerful text search and filtering capabilities within their PHP code without relying on external system calls. The extension exposes grep's command-line features through PHP functions, allowing developers to perform complex regular expression matching and text processing more efficiently than using PHP's native string functions alone.

From the sources

grep is a greenfield PHP extension project implemented in C and built as a shared object with phpize . This repository keeps the upstream GNU grep source in vendor/grep and builds a native PHP module around a separate extension entrypoint. It is not a PHP userspace wrapper around the grep CLI. GNU grep is GPLv3-or-later. If this extension links against, embeds, or adapts GNU grep internals, the resulting combined work has GPL implications for distribution. That constraint is intentional and should stay explicit in project documentation and release artifacts. The repository-level license notice is in LICENSE , and the full GNU GPLv3 text is vendored in vendor/grep/COPYING . PCRE mode, richer…from github.com

    I wrote a book on GNU grep and ripgrep2019 · ▲182

My book on "GNU grep and ripgrep" is free to download today and tomorrow [1][2] Code snippets, example files and sample chapters are available on GitHub [3] The book uses plenty of examples and regular expressions are also covered from scratch. The book is suitable for beginners as well as serves as a reference. Hope you find it useful, I would be grateful for your feedback and suggestions. I used pandoc+xelatex [4] to generate the pdf. An extension of regular expressions for text editing, with a grep-like command-line tool. If you, like me, struggle with group logic in regular expressions, you might find it useful. I wanted to do this for a very long time. It is more of a sketch or prototype. I'd really appreciate your feedback!

An eBook with hundreds of GNU Awk one-liners2020 · ▲539

Hi, I recently published my ebook on GNU awk one-liners [1]. It starts from the basics of awk syntax and then discusses one-liner examples. There's a chapter on regular expressions as well. The github repo has the details on how to get the PDF version, all the example files and code snippets used in the book, sample chapters as well the markdown source used to generate the PDF. I made all my ebooks [2] free last month amidst the pandemic fears. These include GNU grep & ripgrep, GNU sed and three books on regular expressions (Python, Ruby, JavaScript). I'd appreciate your feedback and hope…
