GPXZ Elevation API

A simple API for high-quality elevation data.

GPXZ Elevation API launched on October 13, 2021 with 3 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 5 years on.

What it does

The GPXZ elevation dataset seamlessly merges high quality open data, from global bathymetry to 1m lidar. Our API lets you make low-latency point queries, high-throughput batch lookups, and has a drop-in endpoint compatible with the Google Maps Elevation API.

A simple API for high-resolution elevation data. Query the height of single points, batch locations, and elevation profiles.

The GPXZ DEM seamlessly merges high quality elevation data, from global bathymetry to 50cm lidar. Our API lets you query points , GeoTIFF rasters , map tiles , and has a drop-in replacement for the Google Elevation API. GPXZ uses high-resolution lidar data where available. Compared to satellite-based imagery, lidar is more accurate and captures finer details. Where lidar is not available, base imagery from the 30m Copernicus dataset is used. Released in 2020 and updated in 2023, this dataset massively improves on large-scale datasets that came before. GPXZ uses a custom seamless merging algorithm to combine datasets. This approach avoids the cliffs and discontinuities created by simple…from gpxz.io

I'm working on a GPS track visualizer for quite some time. It shines in hilly and mountaineous terrain (where a 3D view makes more sense), but it also offers quite a lot of Strava-like features (statistics etc.). You can upload your GPX and FIT files manually, or sync directly with Garmin, Coros and Polar. See https://cubetrek.com for the live app and check out some examples there. It's free and opens source. Also, anyone who likes to work with 3D visualizations (especially Babylon.js), let me know if you like to help polish this thing further.

I made a web app to generate 3D models of real places on earth from land cover and elevation data. Click anywhere on the map to get a polygon, and then click "generate". It should work at most scales, but if your watershed or region selection is too large, the result can be less exciting because it's so flat. As a warning, the 3D models can sometimes be too much for my phone. It's nicer on desktop. I'm still working better on mobile support. The land cover data I'm using gives a cool effect, but at some point I'd like to add in global imagery and clouds. The backend is a Python thread…

Google released an API in May to get fetch 3D Tiles of anywhere on Earth. Using this in standard 3D engines like Blender is tricky because (1) the tiles are in a geographic coordinate system (2) you get a lot of little tiles at varying quality levels I wanted to simplify this so all you need to do is get an API key, select a map region and a zoom level, and get one combined glTF file that you can throw into any engine. Especially if you're just prototyping and want to see how this data looks in your engine before investing in figuring out all the nuances of the API & coordinate system. (Note…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
