HI

HN iGoogle gadget

Still in early development, but I made an HN iGoogle gadget (see http://www.google.com/ig/directory?hl=en&url=hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/109361710563279833553/iHN.xml ) and wanted to get your feedback on: 1) How many people use iGoogle 2) What they use it for (news, social, etc.) 3) If an HN gadget is useful to you, what would you like to see added to the gadget I created Thanks!

HN iGoogle gadget launched on October 27, 2010 with 9 votes, #18 of 55 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 15 years on.

    Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city2024 · ▲768

Hey HN! I just published https://meet.hn, a map to find hackers in your city. How it works? Demo of the signup process: https://x.com/meet_hn/status/1834918518904746329 1. Fill the form: username, city+country 2. Copy the text generated in the box below the form, and paste it in your HN description. 3. Click "Add me on the map" Optionnaly (it's recommended!) you can add links to your socials as well as some tags to showcase your interests. Why does it exist? I created this because, despite its harsh reputation on the internet, I love the HN community. I…

  • I asked an HN member for feedback and she blew my mind2010 · slideshare.net · ▲453

A few days ago, I responded to a comment by bloggergirl offering to read anyone's web copy and help. I shot off an email hoping for a paragraph or two of feedback on my startup's copy. Instead I received a professional, detailed deck of tons of invaluable well thought out feedback. It must have taken her an entire afternoon. Here's a link to it: http://www.slideshare.net/shereefb/recommendations-for-bettermeans To top it off, this isn't someone with a lot of free time on her hands, she's only days away from launching her own startup (page99test) This community blows my mind!

  • My recommendation engine for Hacker News2023 · hn-recommend.julienc.me · ▲314

Hi! I’m Julien and I built a recommendation engine for Hacker News. I feel like this website is a gold mine. Every day, I find some very interesting stories about a topic. And sometimes, I want to find other stories covering that same topic but I can’t. Hacker News has years of history of awesome discussion and ressources. Unfortunately, I think HN Algolia isn’t helpful in searching these old threads. As a student, I want to learn a lot from this website. This is why I created HN Recommend. Input a sentence or the URL of an article, and get the most popular and similar posts from Hacker…

  • I made a search engine for Hacker News2024 · hackernews.demo.vectara.com · ▲211

I love HN but always felt the search with algolia is okay but does have some limitations. Since I work at Vectara I decided to try and create a better search for HN. It's based on data from roughly the last 6 months of HN stories and comments. Would love to hear feedback and how useful this is relative to the existing search.

  • I open-sourced my HN comment/reply alerts service2024 · github.com · ▲13

2 months ago I launched a service that sends email alerts when you get a new comment/reply on Hacker News. I've only been able to acquire 6 users since releasing it (°ー°〃) I tried promoting it here (duuh), Reddit, and LinkedIn. Optimized it for SEO (ranking 3rd on my target keywords). All with limited success. So I've decided to open-source it! Hacker News Reader for the iPad2011 · bit.ly · ▲17

Since I got an iPad I was looking for a better Hacker News reading experience than the one you can get using the web version. On the iPhone I use the ihackernews.com web app (and soon going to try news.yc). It's decent for the iPhone, but it doesn't scale good on the iPad. To my surprise, when I checked there was no decent iPad app for HN (i.e. lacking ability to comment or vote, no readability support and more). I anyway wanted to give a try to iPad development, and was looking for an interesting project to work on. Making HN reader app seemed as a good candidate. Over the last weekend I…

  • Here's the website: http://markup.io/ We created MarkUp at Medium to help make the QA process better for sites we're working on. Grab the MarkUp bookmarklet, go to some page in your browser, then click it to draw on the page. Publish to make a link you can share. We've tried similar tools like BounceApp, Notable, and Skitch. Everything else we found is screenshot-based or takes us out of the browser. We wanted something that felt quicker than screenshots and more integrated with the browsing experience. Instead of taking a screenshot, MarkUp snapshots the DOM in the current page, strips the…
