Lean Startup Stack

Free and cheap resources for bootstrapping startup founders.

Lean Startup Stack launched on September 3, 2020 with 18 votes, #927 of 3,898 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 6 years on.

What it does

This is a simple website, adapted from an article I published 4 months ago, expanding on this concept of a Lean Startup Stack for bootstrapping founders to use for getting shit done. Enjoy!

What software a startup actually needs on day 0, what it costs, and what to skip until later. Prices checked and dated.

Most startup tool lists are written by people selling one of the tools, and they all recommend buying everything on day one. This one is ordered by when you actually need something, and it says out loud where you should not spend yet. I track 89 tools across 7 categories, and I re-check the prices on a 90 day loop so the numbers here are not two years stale. The mistake I see most is buying the seed-stage stack at day 0. It is not that the tools are bad, it is that you pay for a year of a thing that solves a problem you do not have yet, and then you are locked into it when your needs change. Buy A domain, email, and somewhere to write things down. Nothing else. Skip CRM, analytics, project…from leanstartupstack.com

Almost eight years ago I launched an online “Linux sysadmin course for newbies” here at HN. It was a side-project that went well, but never generated enough money to allow me to fully commit to leaving the Day Job. After surviving the Big C, and getting made redundant I thought I might improve and relaunch it commercially – but my doctors are a pessimistic bunch, so it looked like I didn’t have the time. Instead, I rejigged/relaunched it via a Reddit forum this February as free and open - and have now gathered a team of helpers to ensure that it keeps going each month even after I can’t…
