Lock and cache using Redis

Most caching libraries don't do locking, meaning that >1 process can be calculating a cached value at the same time. Since you presumably cache things because they cost CPU, database reads, or money, doesn't it make sense to lock while caching? - seamusabshere/lock_and_cache

Lock and cache using Redis launched on November 15, 2015 with 19 votes, #1,887 of 4,110 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 10 years on.

In plain words

Lock and Cache using Redis is a caching library that prevents multiple processes from simultaneously calculating the same cached value. Most caching systems allow concurrent computation of identical values, which wastes CPU, database resources, or money. This tool adds locking to Redis-based caching, ensuring only one process computes a value while others wait for the result. It's designed for developers who need efficient caching with reduced resource redundancy.

Last night, while trying to figure out the best way to implement caching in my app, I had an idea for a dirt-simple caching system based on a dependency graph. The premise I started with is that one of the hardest things to manage in a cache is dependencies between entities. In order to cache items effectively, you inevitably have to duplicate "child" data inside of "parent" entries. Then, when a child is changed, you have to invalidate the child and its parents, and its parents' parents, and so on. To try to help this, I hacked together a simple Node.js library called Stash, which models…

Hi guys, creator of lockable here - the easiest way to think of lockable is as `flock` for when you don’t have a shared file system. You can use it to control concurrent access to resources or to ensure only a single instance of a process runs at any given time. Your processes can acquire, refresh and release locks via simple HTTP requests, so it’s language/framework agnostic. E.g. with `curl`: $ curl https://lockable.dev/api/acquire/my-lock-name { "response": true //or false, if the lock wasn’t available } $ curl…

I am the author of the platform, happy to reply to any question you might have! It scales up really nicely thanks to a year of research and development of the hashtable implemented in cachegrand, on the hardware used for benchmarking, an AMD EPYC 7502P, it was able to reach up to 5mln GET QPS and 4.5mln SET QPS, with batching up to 60mln GET QPS and up to 26MLN SET QPS. cachegrand is fast, it's fully Open Source, it's under a BSD 3-clause license - it can be used easily as standalone platform or incorporated in other ones without any licensing issue - and we are working to expand the Redis…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
