I find the blue links of Wikipedia very distracting, and my attention starts skipping around when I read text that is busy like that. Gone are inline links, footnotes, most references, many tables, all images. I removed all the distractions on a what-if basis. I've also experimented with designing the encyclopedia around offering other forms of exploration than using inline links. Search is implemented through grievous abuse of a PATRICIA Trie.
