Markvis

Make visualization in markdown.

Markvis launched on July 12, 2017 with 118 votes, #295 of 2,972 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 9 years on.

What it does

Quantitative charts in Markdown — the fence is the data.

Write a table in a Markdown code block. MarkVis draws the chart. Change a number — the picture changes. If the chart cannot draw, you still see the table. The pictures below come from the same Markdown as the numbers. Nothing is hand-traced. The same block always draws the same chart. Not a one-off screenshot. If something is wrong, you still see the rows — never a blank hole. Comma-separated rows or a Markdown table. Not a blob of JSON. A person or a model writes the same block. Not a screenshot. folio is the default. Light and dark on this site are the page, not the chart. Save a picture next to the text so any viewer can see the chart. Copy a block. Paste it in Play. Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
