Multi-OS Serverless functions with Docker

Learn about multi-OS/hybrid clusters with Docker - how to create them, why they're important and see it in action with the OpenFaaS serverless framework.

Multi-OS Serverless functions with Docker launched on September 13, 2017 with 9 votes, #983 of 3,073 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 9 years on.

What it does

In this post I'll show how you can build and deploy multi-OS containers with Docker and the OpenFaaS Serverless functions and why multi-OS clusters are important. OpenFaaS is a serverless functions framework for Docker and Kubernetes which is experiencing viral growth and interest. In the container world Linux dominates, but as of last year Windows Containers support became GA and that meant running ad-hoc Docker containers with Windows executables was possible on Windows 2016 Server Core and Windows 2016 Nano Server. ohai! I've released Lightwhale 3, which is possibly the easiest way to self-host Docker containers. It's a free, immutable Linux system purpose-built to live-boot straight into a working Docker Engine, thereby shortcutting the need for installation, configuration, and maintenance. Its simple design makes it easy to learn, and its low memory footprint should make it especially attractive during these times of RAMageddon. Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
