My weekend project to learn Javascript - 'Pinterest for Hacker News'
We launched Hackerest last week. We’re a group of security engineers based in Italy (ex-Amazon, Accenture) who spent years doing pentests the traditional way and kept wondering why the workflow still looks like it did in 2010. Most pentests today (still) work like this: 1. the engagement runs for days or weeks 2. nothing is shared until everything is finished 3. the client gets a PDF long after the issues were actually discovered 4. half of the attack surface has changed by then What Hackerest does: * findings appear in real time during the active testing window, as testers discover them *…
My weekend project to learn Javascript - 'Pinterest for Hacker News' launched on February 2, 2012 with 95 votes, #21 of 360 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 14 years on.
In plain words
Hackerest is a penetration testing platform that delivers security findings in real time as testers discover them, rather than waiting weeks for a final report. Built by security engineers from Italy with backgrounds at Amazon and Accenture, it streamlines the traditional pentest workflow through collaborative testing tools, automatic versioning of findings, and a credit-based model for quick engagement starts. The platform is designed for businesses seeking faster vulnerability detection and remediation without delays in the security testing process.

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

A javascript library that allows easy manipulation of the favicon to include nice looking alert bubbles. This means that users can pin your site and still see when their attention is needed! It's been done before, but in my opinion not in a way aesthetically pleasing enough for production use. This library also falls back to the standard number in page title approach for browsers that do no support canvas / dynamic favicons. Thoughts welcome.
