Nushell

shell, data, dataframes, rust, pipelines

Nushell launched on April 30, 2023 with 6 votes, #2,033 of 4,853 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 3 years on.

What it does

Modern shell and language. For macOS, Windows, and Linux, written in Rust. It has native support for reading and writing JSON, YAML, TOML, and other file structured formats. All commands generate structured data that can be transformed using pipelines.

A new type of shell.

Nu works on Linux, macOS, BSD, and Windows. Learn it once, then use it anywhere. Nu pipelines use structured data so you can safely select, filter, and sort the same way every time. Stop parsing strings and start solving problems. Nu speaks JSON, YAML, SQLite, Excel, and more out of the box. It's easy to bring data into a Nu pipeline whether it's in a file, a database, or a web API: Nu operates on typed data, so it catches bugs that other shells don't. And when things break, Nu tells you exactly where and why: Nushell is available as downloadable binaries , via your favourite package manager , in a GitHub Action , and as source code . Grsh – A high-performance shell for FreeBSD written in RustJan 2026 · grimreaper.icu · ▲50

I built GRSH because I wanted a modern, memory-safe shell that feels native to FreeBSD but works seamlessly on macOS. While there are many shells out there, GRSH is my take on a minimal, fast, and secure command interpreter written entirely in Rust. It's designed for users who want the safety guarantees of Rust without the overhead of more bloated alternatives. I'm currently working on the official FreeBSD port. I’d love to get feedback on the shell's behavior and performance from the community. Github: https://github.com/antoniomalara301289/grsh

  • Shelgon: A Framework for Building Interactive REPL Shells in Rust2025 · github.com · ▲130

I've been working on Shelgon, a framework that lets you build your own custom REPL shells and interactive CLI applications in Rust. You can use Shelgon to: - Create a custom shell with only a few lines of code - Build interactive debugging tools with persistent state between commands - Develop domain-specific language interpreters with shell-like interfaces - Add REPL capabilities to existing applications Getting started is straightforward - implement a single trait that handles your command execution logic, and Shelgon takes care of the terminal UI, input handling, and async runtime…

  • Run – a CLI universal code runner I built while learning Rust2025 · github.com · ▲96

Hi HN — I’m learning Rust and decided to build a universal CLI for running code in many languages. The tool, Run, aims to be a single, minimal dependency utility for: running one-off snippets (from CLI flags), running files, reading and executing piped stdin, and providing language-specific REPLs that you can switch between interactively. I designed it to support both interpreted languages (Python, JS, Ruby, etc.) and compiled languages (Rust, Go, C/C++). It detects languages from flags or file extensions, can compile temporary files for compiled languages, and exposes a unified REPL…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hi HN, Today we’re launching GPT-4 answers on Phind.com, a developer-focused search engine that uses generative AI to browse the web and answer technical questions, complete with code examples and detailed explanations. Unlike vanilla GPT-4, Phind feeds in relevant websites and technical documentation, reducing the model’s hallucination and keeping it up-to-date. To use it, simply enable the “Expert” toggle before doing a search. GPT-4 is making a night-and-day difference in terms of answer quality. For a question like “How can I RLHF a LLaMa model”, Phind in Expert mode delivers a…
