OPENBIONICS

An open-source initiative for low-cost prosthetic devices.

OPENBIONICS launched on August 28, 2016 with 3 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 10 years on.

What it does

OpenBionics develops affordable, lightweight, open-source robotic and bionic devices — robot hands, prosthetic hands, and exoskeleton gloves — released under a Creative Commons license.

We design affordable, lightweight, open-source robot hands, prosthetic hands, and exoskeleton gloves — and release every schematic and line of firmware under a Creative Commons license. Every design, schematic, and firmware release is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license — free to study, build on, and redistribute. Devices are engineered around accessible components and fabrication methods so that researchers, clinicians, and makers can build them without specialised infrastructure. Material selection and structural design favour compact, low-mass solutions that are practical for daily wear and laboratory experimentation alike. Anthropomorphic robotic hands…from openbionics.org

It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
