Our weekly space industry newsletter is out of beta
Hello HN! My partner and I just published issue #5 of The Orbital Index, our brief & technical weekly newsletter about space science and the space industry, and so we've taken the project out of beta. The process of finding a voice and fine tuning the level of technical detail is ongoing, but we feel like we've arrived at something succinct, interesting, and technical, in a large part because of the great feedback that we have received from HN subscribers from our last Show HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19227434) a month ago. Here's our website, where you can signup…
What it does
In the maker’s words, at launch
Here's our website, where you can signup for free: https://orbitalindex.com And here is our latest issue, fresh off the presses a few minutes ago: https://orbitalindex.com/archive/2019-03-26-archive-Issue-5/ If you like what we're doing, please tell us! And if you have suggestions for how any part of The Orbital Index could be better, we'd love to hear them too.

- UTUpdating the TimescaleDB license thanks to HN2020 · ▲25
4 months ago, our announcement for our free, multi-node, petabyte-scale time-series database generated 200+ comments: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23272992 Many commented on the Timescale License, our source-available license governing advanced features (eg multi-node). Most were positive, but some pointed out drawbacks (who says HN can't be productive!). That spurred an internal debate. Today we're happy to share an updated Timescale License with new rights, including the "right-to-repair" and "right-to-improve." And we’re doubling-down on our community, making all…
- IMI measured the half-life of 41,301 Show HN launches. It's 7 hoursJul 2026 · jonno.nz · ▲37
I scraped every Show HN from the last 12 months (41,301 posts) plus the full comment tree of every launch with 10+ comments, ~100k comment timestamps, all from the Algolia HN API. The median launch gets 2 points and 0 comments. For launches that do get traction, half the comments they'll ever get arrive within 7.2 hours and 90% within 26, and the top decile decays on the same clock as everyone else. Vote timestamps aren't public, so comment timing is the attention proxy; caveats are in the post. Everything reproduces from the repo with one command…
- RORetrospective on having my “Show HN” on the front-page2021 · ▲13
I was lucky enough to have my site trending on Friday (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25872922). It’s an icon site that lists open source icons. I wanted to share some stats on the results after 3 days. Worth noting was that I submitted it on a Friday morning (at which point I went for a walk and a coffee; eek). - 24,997 page views. I (embarrassingly) didn’t have GA set up when I first submitted it, so this is probably missing a few hundred page views - 21 “feedback” emails (half of which were spam). I assume such a high percentage of these were spam because my Feedback…
