PawPause

Lock your keyboard and prevent cats from causing chaos

PawPause launched on June 2, 2026 with 147 votes, #226 of 22,647 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches.

What it does

A tiny macOS menu bar app that detects when your cat is on the keyboard and pauses input system-wide. 100% on-device. Open source. Free.

Paw Pause lives in your menu bar, watches for the unmistakable pattern of a cat on the keys, and pauses input system-wide before it posts gibberish or fires a shortcut. Type normally; the cat gets clamped. A tool that reads the keyboard should earn that access. Paw Pause is built so it can't betray it — and the whole thing is open source, so you don't have to take my word for it. Zero network calls, zero storage, no analytics. Nothing you type ever leaves your Mac — there's nowhere for it to go. The detector inspects which physical keys fire and how fast — never the letters. It models paws, not passwords. Every line is on GitHub. Read it, build it yourself, or audit exactly what it does…from miladsafarzadeh1.github.io

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Today, I’m proud to announce Homebrew 6.0.0. The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate). Happy to discuss any questions here!

  • Hi HN! I was super frustrated at apps like tiktok and wechat preventing me from saving or downloading the animated gifs, so I made a little tool to turn a screen recording into a slack-sized emoji. Hope you get some value from this!
