Penrose Pipes

I’ve been a big fan of Hexapipes since it came out last year. I also wanted to learn about Penrose tiling. So I implemented a Penrose grid for Hexapipes! My intention is to contribute the code back to Hexapipes. Earlier this year I contributed the Cube grid as a practice run. It is a joy working with the brilliant @gereleth. It will take some work to raise the code to the Hexapipes standard. But the game is ready to play, so I thought I’d release it at its own domain. It is based on a new JS library for generating a random area of Penrose tiles, implementing algorithms by Simon Tatham. Demo…

In plain words

Penrose Pipes is a puzzle game that adapts the Hexapipes pipe-connecting mechanics to a Penrose tiling grid. Built on a new JavaScript library that generates random Penrose tile patterns using Simon Tatham's algorithms, it offers players a visual twist on the classic puzzle format. Designed for puzzle game enthusiasts and those curious about Penrose tiling, the game provides a relatively accessible but aesthetically distinctive playing experience while the developer works toward integrating it into the main Hexapipes project.

Hello, HN - I wanted to share this puzzle game I made during my vacation. I'm rather fond of the pipes puzzle where your goal is to restore a scrambled network of connections by rotating tiles. It's usually played on a grid of squares and this all started when I decided to make a programmatic solver for that kind of puzzle. Then I realized that with some minor changes the solver could generate new puzzle instances. I thought about what kind of puzzle to make and someone suggested a hexagonal grid. Adapting the generator wasn't too hard but then I had to create a way to play this variant. So…

Hello HN! We’re a small creative studio specializing in real-time 3D experiences. Netlify approached us to design and build an interactive experience to celebrate reaching 5 million developers. Inspired by the classic game Marble Madness, we created a gamified experience where users control a ball through playful, interactive levels. The goal was to blend marketing content with the look and feel of a game to engage users. The app is built with Three.js [1], using our custom render pipeline and shaders, and uses Rapier for physics simulation [2]. The 2D content is overlaid on the WebGL view…

    I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries2024 · rahulilango.com · ▲1,054

This is the first iteration of a short game I’m making that tries to interactively explain some of my favorite math questions / ideas. My goal is mostly to get the player curious and not necessarily to explain absolutely everything. There were a lot of fun technical parts to building this: - For implementation reasons, it’s much easier if the lines all have integer intersection points with each other. To do this, when a new line is added I “cheat” by rounding intersections to integers and then splitting the old lines at the intersection into new linds (with potentially different slopes)…

I was wondering how I can arrange objects along a spherical helix path, and read some articles on it. I ended up learning about parametric equations again, and make this visualization to document what I learned: https://visualrambling.space/moving-objects-in-3d/ feel free to visit and let me know what you think!

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
