PushEnv (dotEnv killer)
The modern dotenv: typed, validated, and secure
What it does
PushEnv is the modern dotenv — but type-safe, validated, encrypted, and built for teams. It loadsenv files like dotenv, but adds Zod validation, automatic TypeScript types, and a zero-knowledge encrypted sync CLI for sharing secrets safely. With PushEnv you can: • prevent misconfigured env outages • get fully typed process.env • sync secrets across teams securely • run CI without writingenv files A single tool for local config, team sync, validation, types, and production safety.

I like the idea of using dotenv files, but I dislike having to use different language-specific libraries to read them. To solve this, I created a small utility that lets you prefix any command with "dotenv" to load the ".env" file. This is how I imagine dotenv would work if it had started as a UNIX utility rather than a Node.js library.

Hey HN, I'm so happy to finally show you all this release after years of hard work. I posted the first version of EnvKey to HN back in 2017 (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15330757), then went through YC in W18 (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16569534). EnvKey is an end-to-end encrypted configuration and secrets manager. It protects your organization's API keys, encryption keys, credentials, and other secrets, and makes it easy to run servers, scripts, tests, and everything else with the latest config. It also helps you avoid duplication in your…
- DMDotenv Mask Editor: No more embarrassing screen leaks of your .envJan 2026 · marketplace.visualstudio.com · ▲28
Hi HN, I built this because I often work in coworking spaces or do screen sharing, and I've always had this fear of accidentally flashing my .env file with production secrets to the whole room (or recording). It’s a simple VS Code extension that opens .env files in a custom grid editor. It automatically masks any value longer than 6 characters so I can safely open the file to check keys without exposing the actual secrets. It runs 100% locally with zero dependencies (I know how sensitive these files are). It just reads the file, renders the grid, and saves it back as standard text. It's open…

- SASendenv, a CLI tool to share environment variables2024 · github.com · ▲83
My weekend project sendenv is a CLI tool that lets you share environment variables securely with someone else. It is built on top of magic-wormhole which allows for safe, account-free data transfer. When you send variables using sendenv, it creates a one-time code. You give this code to the person who needs the variables. They use the code in their shell to load the variables. This is handy for quickly setting up new team members or copying local environment variables to another system. Its currently in alpha obviously, but the core functionality works (I have tested sending vaults from a…

Community, All the HN belong to you. This is an archive of hacker news that fits in your browser. When I made HN Made of Primes I realized I could probably do this offline sqlite/wasm thing with the whole GBs of archive. The whole dataset. So I tried it, and this is it. Have Hacker News on your device. Go to this repo (https://github.com/DOSAYGO-STUDIO/HackerBook): you can download it. Big Query -> ETL -> npx serve docs - that's it. 20 years of HN arguments and beauty, can be yours forever. So they'll never die. Ever. It's the unkillable static archive of HN and it's…
