What it does

Quakpit is a macOS menu bar app that connects to your calendar and sends an animal-piloted plane flying across your screen before your meetings start. A duck, a dinosaur, a pigeon, a capybara, or a dog, your choice, cruises across your display towing a banner with your meeting name and how long you have left. Hard to ignore. Impossible to hate. Free to download & open source. Connect your calendar, pick your animal, never miss a meeting.

Quakpit is a tiny desktop app: a duck in a plane flies across your screen towing a banner that reminds you of your next meeting. Free for macOS (Windows coming soon). Zero data, no servers.

A little duck in a plane flies across your screen — above every app — towing a banner that reminds you of your next meeting. Synced automatically from your calendar. First launch: open System Settings → Privacy & Security → "Open Anyway" (not Apple-signed yet). Set it up once. Then forget it — the duck shows up on its own. Paste any iCal/ICS link (no login) or sign in to Apple iCloud — read-only, straight from your machine. Google & Outlook are on the way. Pick your character and plane colour, a banner theme and your message, plus a 5- or 10-minute heads-up. Right on time, the plane crosses above every app with your message — and your character's little sound. A grey toast in the corner for…from quakpit.app

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
