Recast
High-performance open-source product demo creator tool
What it does
Recast is a high-performance fully open-source screen recording tool with integrated, cinematic editing capabilities. It aims to replace messy timeline-based tools with a "Smooth by Default" experience for startups and creators generating polished product demos.
Recast turns a raw screen capture into a polished, shareable demo. Smart auto-edits and a friendly timeline anyone can drive. macOS, Windows, Linux.
Smart zoom, cursor smoothing, and silence cuts happen while you record. By the time you stop, the demo is mostly done. Region, window, or full screen. One shortcut, no project setup. One with the OS recorder. One with Recast. Same take, polished by the time you stop. Drag to compare. Both clips play at once; the polished cut lands shorter once silence is trimmed. Every laptop ships a screen recorder. None of them ship a demo. Region, window, or full screen. One shortcut starts the capture. One shortcut starts the capture. No project, no codec picker, no account. Save capture presets and switch with one shortcut between demo, clip, and tutorial. A knock at the door no longer means…from recast.li

I released a new version of Recut recently, rewritten from the ground up using Rust, Svelte, Tauri, TypeScript, and Tailwind (RUSTTT stack for the win!). It's the first app I've built with Tauri and I've really enjoyed it. Some back story: Recut is a tool I built to speed up my screencast editing workflow. It's like a lightweight single-purpose video editor. It chops out the pauses, with some knobs to tweak how closely it cuts and what it leaves in, and lets you get a live preview of what it'll look and sound like with the cuts applied. It can then export to a handful of other editors,…

Parallel agents, diff reviewer, and multi-model comparisons
Dev tools · May 2026 · kilo.ai

Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
