Sequence Bio

Unlocked Newfoundland’s genetics for drug discovery

Sequence Bio launched on August 16, 2019 with 69 votes, #655 of 3,185 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 7 years on.

What it does

Sequence Bio built the legislative and ethical framework to access Newfoundland's (NL) enriched genetic data and deep health records for the first time with the NL Genome Project.

We study the genetic causes of inherited disease to push drug discovery forward with the right targets and predictors of drug response from the start.

90% of potential drugs fail, often because they lack the genetic evidence to prove they will work. Sequence Bio is on a mission to change that. By studying the inherited causes of disease, we aim to identify the right drug targets and predictors of disease and treatment response from the start—ensuring transformative medicines reach the people who need them. In Newfoundland and Labrador, our research is powered by founder effects that bring the genetic drivers of disease into focus. By pairing these insights with deep clinical and family health histories, we can move beyond association to causal evidence—linking genes to disease with a level of confidence that pushes discovery forward. I've been working on nodes.bio - an interactive tool for visualizing biological networks and systems thinking. The tool features interactive network visualization powered by Cytoscape.js, with real-time graph editing and manipulation capabilities. It supports JSON import/export and provides a responsive design that works seamlessly on the desktop (mobile-friendly version coming later). The tech stack combines modern frontend technologies with robust backend architecture. The frontend uses Next.js 14 with TypeScript and Cytoscape.js for the visualization engine. The backend is built with…
