Hi HN, After 9 years of running my own OpenStreetMap tile server infra for MapHub (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11389989), I've open-sourced it and launched OpenFreeMap. You can either self-host or use our public instance. Everything is open-source, including the full production setup — there’s no 'open-core' model here. Check out the repo (https://github.com/hyperknot/openfreemap). The map data comes from OpenStreetMap. I also provide weekly full planet downloads both in Btrfs and MBTiles formats. I aim to cover the running costs of the public…

Hi HN! 2d spritesheets for game development are often distributed as a PNG image, sometimes with a separate JSON or XML metadata document describing the layout, including any animation sequences within the sheet. Sometimes there is no metadata document and you have to work it out and manually write custom code to chop up the spritesheet and reference the sprites you want. I think it would be good if it became standard practice to distribute spritesheet PNGs with the metadata inline inside a PNG "chunk" so the whole thing is self-contained. That way artists can just distribute one file, and…

Hello HN! I’m excited to share this open-source community mashup showing the power and possibility of combining 3D Gaussian splat scans with traditional mesh-based 3D tiles maps in the browser. As you've probably seen on HN a bunch lately, Gaussian splats are a new method to allow custom 3D scans of scenes and objects [1] and Google Maps 3D Tiles API are the same 3D buildings and street views your familiar with in Google Earth or Google Maps, and recently they’ve been made available for inclusion in web apps. Combining splats + 3d map mixes highly detailed real-world custom micro-scans with…

Open-source pixel art editor with animation and auto-tiling tilesetsAug 2026 · simplepixelart.com · ▲8Hi HN! I built a free pixel art editor that runs entirely in the browser — no install, no signup, no watermark. The frontend is open source (MIT): https://github.com/comficker/simplepixelart What it does: - Sprite editor with layers, selections, mirror drawing, and an infinite-canvas workspace (multiple boards on one desk) - Frame-by-frame animation with onion skin, per-frame duration, GIF and spritesheet export - Tileset builder that auto-generates Wang-16 and blob-47 terrain sets from a single base tile — exports Godot 4 TileSet, Tiled .tsx, or PNG+JSON — plus a tilemap…
