Synthesize TikZ Graphics Programs for Scientific Figures and Sketches
Creating high-quality scientific figures can be time-consuming and challenging, even though sketching ideas on paper is relatively easy. Furthermore, recreating existing figures that are not stored in formats preserving semantic information is equally complex. To tackle this problem, we introduce DeTikZify, a novel multimodal language model that automatically synthesizes scientific figures as semantics-preserving TikZ graphics programs based on sketches and existing figures. We also introduce a Monte Carlo Tree Search-based inference algorithm that enables DeTikZify to iteratively refine its…

In plain words
DeTikZify is a multimodal language model that converts hand-drawn sketches and existing scientific figures into TikZ graphics programs. It preserves the semantic structure of figures while automating what is typically a time-consuming design process. The tool uses a Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithm to iteratively refine outputs without requiring additional training. It is designed for researchers and scientists who need to create or recreate high-quality scientific illustrations in a vector format.

TikZ Editor – WYSIWYG editor for figures in LaTeXJun 2026 · tikz.dev · ▲451Hi all! TikZ is a widely-used LaTeX package for drawing figures in papers. It uses commands like \draw[->] (0,0) -- (1,2); to draw lines, shapes, text, etc. Academics usually code up their figures by hand, so there is lots of twiddling around with the coordinates and recompiling until things look nice. I guess it’s a bit like SVG, but it’s more code than markup, for example it has loops with \foreach. I built an open-source WYSIWYG TikZ editor (available for web and desktop) that allows you to edit your TikZ source code visually by dragging and resizing elements. It simultaneously shows the…
I built an interactive plotter art exhibit for SIGGRAPH2024 · lostpixels.io · ▲167I'm enthralled with using pen plotters to make generative art. Last August at SIGGRAPH, I built an interactive experience for others to see how code can be used to make visual art. The linked blog post is my trials and tribulations of linking a MIDI controller to one of these algorithms and sending its output to a plotter, so that people may witness the end-to-end experience.
