On the table sits all that we've ever made. There, hundreds of shapes, ideas, and fully built products all sit happily. Most of what is on our happy table, you have not yet seen. The first items on the table were cameras. With a small team and factory we built webcams and sold many of them. In this process we learned that our joy comes from creating top electronics for demanding customers. In some ways, it has never been a better time for electronics enthusiasts. Shopping from the same shelf, we access the same set of decent products for cheap. In other ways, it is a worse time. Mass-market electronics have little differentiation. They are built to make the largest group just happy enough…from op.al

  I made a tiny camera with super long battery life2024 · toaster.llc · ▲843

Hey HN! A few years ago someone kept trying to steal my motorcycle, so I decided to make a small camera with really long battery life to catch them. The hardware/software is totally open source, but the companion app only supports macOS currently. (I'm a big fan of native apps, and didn't want to block releasing on Linux/Windows support.) I wrote some blog posts about the process: PCB design: https://toaster.llc/blog/pcb Enclosure design: https://toaster.llc/blog/enclosure Image pipeline:…

  Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers2023 · beepberry.sqfmi.com · ▲731

Hi. I heard HN likes e-paper gadgets so I wanted to share a little side project I’ve been working on with @sqfmi. We’re building Beepberry - a portable e-paper computer for hackers, designed for chatting on Beeper. My day job is running Beeper [0], but I will always have a soft spot for building hardware. I wanted to create a ‘weekend’ device that would let me stay in touch with friends and family, without the distractions of a full smartphone. I imagined a tiny, hackable e-paper screen with a physical keyboard, powered by a Raspberry Pi, that I could use to chat around my home…and pretty…

Hi HN, I’m Kashish, one of the co-founders of SpeedVitals, a platform for testing & monitoring website performance with a major emphasis on Core Web Vitals. Until now, our platform has only focused on Synthetic/Lab testing, such as Lighthouse tests and TTFB tests. But now, we have developed a Real-User Monitoring platform that doubles up as a Web Analytics tool. One major feature we have that most RUM tools lack is Performance Audits. Just like Lighthouse audits work on Lab test data, our audits work across all the real-user visits and gives suggestions on what task to prioritize first.…
