Talk To Your Git Blame - Git Log Search

I built an Open Source tool that lets you search your Git commit history using natural language. You can like: •“When was login added?” • “What changed in the auth flow?” It embeds commit messages using OpenAI or Hugging Face models, stores them in ChromaDB, and queries them semantically with GPT via LangChain. Features: • Fast local search (local storage) • Natural language query interface • Simple Typer-based CLI with commands to list and manage embeddings Ideal for developers who want a smarter way to explore version history. Talk To Your Git Blame - Git Log Search launched on July 24, 2025 with 6 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.

What it does

🚀 New Git CLI tool: Find Whom To Blame with plain English Ask: 🧠When did we switch to JWT? 🔍Who fixed the login bug? Runs locally, uses embeddings, gives answers from git log. Lightweight, terminal-first. Early build — feedback welcome! 🙌 #git #devtools

A developer utility that enables semantic search through Git commit history. This tool extracts commit history, generates vector embeddings, and allows you to search through your repository's history using natural language queries. This script scans your Git repository's commit history, extracts metadata (author, date, commit message), generates vector embeddings using configurable models (OpenAI or Hugging Face), and stores them in a Chroma vector database. You can then perform semantic searches to find relevant commits based on your queries. #! /usr/bin/env bash set -e OS= " $( uname ) " if [[ " $OS " == " Linux " ]] ; then sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y python3…from github.com

I've always wanted a better way to explore the authorship data embedded in a Git commit log. I'm having fun building a CLI tool to do this. It's a bit like the "Contributors" tab on Github that shows you how many commits each contributor has made but much faster and with many more options. If you get a chance to try it out, please let me know. I'd love to hear feedback and suggestions. Thank you!

Hey HN! I built a proof-of-concept for AI memory using Git instead of vector databases. The insight: Git already solved versioned document management. Why are we building complex vector stores when we could just use markdown files with Git's built-in diff/blame/history? How it works: Memories stored as markdown files in a Git repo Each conversation = one commit git diff shows how understanding evolves over time BM25 for search (no embeddings needed) LLMs generate search queries from conversation context Example: Ask "how has my project evolved?" and it uses git diff to show actual…

Hi everyone, I built a CLI tool called *diny* that generates Git commit messages directly from your staged changes. - It runs `git diff` and filters out noise like lockfiles, build artifacts, and binaries. - From the cleaned diff it suggests a clear commit message. - You can confirm or refine the message before committing. Key points: - No setup or API keys required. - Lightweight, local-first workflow. - Supports different lengths and styles (short, normal, long; conventional or simple). - Built in Go with Cobra for a familiar CLI experience. Repo:…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Hey HN! Introducing Trickle Magic Canvas: the world’s first Agentic Canvas, where you can visually co-create apps and websites with AI, from idea to production. Why is a canvas better? Most AI tools today rely on linear chats or text prompts. We believe that limits creativity and clarity. Canvas changes the game. 1. Every version & page at a glance. Each page and sub-page lives on a timeline. You can quickly browse, edit, and preview progress like a living, visual document — no more digging through chat logs or scattered states. 2. The canvas is the context. Unlike linear chats, you can…

  • Today marks ten years, 3653 consecutive days, of running at least one mile every day under the USRSA rules [1]. To celebrate, I built an interactive dashboard that turns a decade of GPX files into charts you can explore. Running has truly changed my life: I've made lifelong friends, explored beautiful places, and more importantly invested into my own health and fitness, which I'm starting to see the positive benefits as I get older. The stack is pretty simple: a NextJS app, with a Postgres database to keep all my running data, and all the stats are pre-computed and cached in Redis, so I…

  • Made this website as an exercise in vibe-coding and GCP. It was posted about a few times around the internet, on sites like Morning Brew (https://www.morningbrew.com/issues/business-buzzkill), MetaFilter (https://www.metafilter.com/209703/Draw-A-Fish), boingboing.net, etc. I think it's cute! I built a basic CNN trained against penises and swastikas, and then anything that doesn't hit the 63% confidence score gets sent to a mod queue, a vibe-coded fish-tinder…

  • Hi HN - I made a site that takes a UK postcode, grabs the local MP's information and generates an AI mockup of what their ID might look like. It's a small, silly protest at the stupidity of the Online Safety Act that just came into force. edit - My open AI credits got hugged to death, please use a known postcode (like one from Kier Starmer's constituency, WC2B6NH) in the meantime.
