TapTalk turns speech into text in any Mac app. Hold a key, speak, release, and it is pasted where your cursor is. It runs entirely on your Mac's Neural Engine. No account, no subscription, no cloud. Built by one developer, in the open. It is not notarized by Apple yet, so on first launch use right-click then Open, or install with Homebrew, which handles it for you. See setup. Your speech flows into the pill. The plain key pastes it as you said it; the Smart key cleans it up on your Mac first. MIT licensed. No subscription, no trial, no paywall. Auditable and forkable on GitHub. Transcription runs on the Apple Neural Engine. Your audio never leaves your Mac. No account, no telemetry. An…from taptalk.dhruvvakharwala.dev

I built a macOS dictation app where everything runs on-device. Transcription, auto-correct, translation. No audio or text leaves your machine. It ships with 4 transcription engines you can swap between: WhisperKit (99 languages), NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B (25 European languages, fastest of the bunch), Qwen3-ASR 0.6B (30 languages), and Apple Speech on macOS 26+. They all run through CoreML/Metal. Whisper is the most versatile, Parakeet wins on raw latency for European languages, Qwen3 does better with CJK. I went with a protocol-based architecture so you pick the engine that fits your…

    Open-source Mac dictation App that's 100% on-device

I built a voice dictation app for macOS mostly because I was tired of how awful Siri is and I didn't want to pay a subscription for cloud tools. The app uses NVIDIA's Parakeet v3 (TDT) as the primary engine. Inference is handled by the FluidAudio library. It's insanely fast on M-series chips. For Intel users, I added local Whisper support ranging from Tiny up to Large v3 Turbo (quantized to save space). The interesting part was the AI integration. I originally tried to pipeline the ASR output into Apple's Intelligence Foundation Model. It was a nightmare, because the content moderation…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
