Exclude development files from Time Machine backups
tmignore launched on October 8, 2019 with 4 votes, #1,552 of 3,363 launches that month. The site was still online in September 2026, 7 years on.
What it does
Time Machine on macOS is a great backup tool. Unfortunately for developers, it also backs up project's dependencies, build output and other undesired files. tmignore excludes files and directories matched bygitignore files from future Time Machine backups.

Time Machine Utilities2023 · github.com · ▲14I wrote some shell scripts to automate "fixing" old Time Machine backups, particularly Time Machine backups from previous computers. I've personally experienced a lot of friction with this, and found out that some of the metadata stored in the Backups.backupdb and individual snapshot directories prevent successful use with Time Machine on other computers in some cases. Time Machine itself does not always handle this gracefully. These utilities should help users wrangle older backups to make them work with Time Machine on their current Mac.

That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
