Today in History: Flashback

Stop doom scrolling. Learn history instead.

What it does

Flashback is a free iOS app that turns idle scroll time into something worth remembering. Every card is a real person or event that shaped the world — told in plain language. 1,800+ cards from 15+ countries. A new Today in History card pinned every morning. 50 Deep Dive long-form articles (WWII, Genghis Khan, Fall of Rome). Daily 7 PM history reminder. No accounts. Works offline. Free. History worth knowing.

We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
