What it does
I needed a timer. Could've downloaded one in 10 seconds. Instead I spent way too long building one because I thought it'd be fun to add my own touch. It's called Tug. It's a 🐸 in your menu bar. The fun part isn't really the timer, it's the frog: • It watches your cursor. Move around, it follows you. • When you pull on it, you can see on its face it does not like that. • You feel a little haptic tap on the trackpad when you do it. It does also work as a timer.
A menu bar timer for macOS you pull out like a tongue. One gesture. Pomodoro built in. No accounts, no sync — runs entirely on your Mac.
Alongside your wifi, battery, the weather. One glance, you know. Tea. Deploy. Oven. Standup. Tug holds them all and rings each one. Native macOS notifications. Hit Options, pick +5 or +10, get back to it. “The execution is polished and Tug turns out to be both pleasant andfrom tug-web-theta.vercel.app

I think it has a pretty innovative UI feature, so I wanted to float it by Hacker News. It's a timer app that turns your Mac's menu bar into a sort of virtual hourglass. Your menu bar starts out tinted blue (or whatever colour you pick) and it slowly drains from right-to-left until your time is up. It works very well for situations where you want to keep track of time, but don't need to be super precise. The menu bar is easy to glance up at, and it doesn't take long to happen…

Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
