Turing machine simulator in C

My implementations of deterministic and non-deterministic turing machines - yedhukrishnan/turing-machine

Turing machine simulator in C launched on May 3, 2015 with 38 votes, #1,181 of 3,670 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 11 years on.

In plain words

This is a C implementation of both deterministic and non-deterministic Turing machines, available on GitHub. It provides working simulations of these theoretical computational models. The project is suitable for students and researchers studying computational theory or anyone interested in exploring how Turing machines function in practice. The implementation covers both variants of the abstract machine concept.

Hey HN! I've been curious about the history of computer science and decided to try to read Turing's 1936 paper where he conceptualizes the Turing Machine, etc. I had trouble understanding the paper, read The Annotated Turing by Charles Petzold (which is wonderful), but felt that reading a reference implementation would help formalize my understanding. When I couldn't find an open source implementation, I decided to write my own. The implementation includes: - Abbreviated tables (m-functions) - Conversions to Standard Descriptions and Description Numbers - A working universal machine - A…

Hi! I've been working on the flipjump project, a programming language with 1 opcode: flip (invert) a bit, then jump (unconditionally). So a bit-flip followed by more bit-flips. It's effectively a bunch of NOT gates. This language, as poor as it sounds, is RICH. Today I completed my compiler from C to FlipJump. It takes C files, and compiles them into flipjump. I finished testing it all today, and it works! My key interest in this project is to stretch what we know of computing and to prove that anything can be done even with minimal power. I appreciate you reading my announcement, and be…
