Vim: Convenient Code Navigation for Your Projects

Vim: Convenient Code Navigation for Your Projects launched on July 22, 2016 with 12 votes, #1,599 of 3,671 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 10 years on.

In plain words

Vim is a text editor plugin that adds project-based code navigation capabilities to Vim. Designed for developers who prefer Vim's editing experience but want IDE-like project organization features, it bridges the gap between Vim's lightweight text-editing approach and traditional IDEs. The tool addresses Vim's lack of built-in project management, allowing users to maintain Vim's responsive "talking-to-editor" feeling while working more efficiently with larger codebases.

From the sources

Vim is not perfect. It is great in some aspects, but it sucks in others. There are lots of IDEs out there, and some time ago I even tried to switch to an IDE, but I failed, even though most IDEs have Vim-emulation mode. Nothing else can give that true “talking-to-editor” feeling to me. But, well, Vim is not perfect. One of the things I really miss is that there's no such thing as a “project” in Vim. Vim is a text-editor, not an IDE, and unfortunately in 2015 we still don't have a standard interface between a text editor and an IDE . That's the real shame in my opinion, and so, we have to struggle with rather hackish solutions all the time. One of the things I undoubtedly need…from dmitryfrank.com

VimLM is a local, offline coding assistant for Vim. It’s like Copilot but runs entirely on your machine—no APIs, no tracking, no cloud. - Deep Context: Understands your codebase (current file, selections, references). - Conversational: Iterate with follow-ups like "Add error handling". - Vim-Native: Keybindings like `Ctrl-l` for prompts, `Ctrl-p` to replace code. - Inline Commands: `!include` files, `!deploy` code, `!continue` long responses. Perfect for privacy-conscious devs or air-gapped environments. Try it: ``` pip install vimlm vimlm ```…

  • Using Vim as an input method editor (IME) for X11 apps2022 · github.com · ▲132

As a Vim user, I often use Vim to write some text and then copy & paste it into another text field of GUI apps (e.g. browsers, chat apps, etc.), because almost all of these text fields provide only very basic editing functions. A while ago, I came up with an idea: what if we could use Vim as an IME? Ordinary IMEs are used to input some non-English characters, but the essential functions of IME are 1) receiving a keyboard sequence 2) process the key sequence and outputting a text These functions are the same as text editor's. So I thought implementing an IME that can be used with Vim…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
