Xs-vm – A small virtual machine written in Python

Xs-vm – A small virtual machine written in Python launched on July 20, 2015 with 34 votes, #1,483 of 4,208 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 11 years on.

In plain words

Xs-vm is a Python-based virtual machine that executes ARM-like assembly code, designed for educational purposes. It supports fundamental operations including function calls, recursion, and stack management through a simple instruction set. The project prioritizes ease of development and learning over performance, making it suitable for students and developers exploring how virtual machines work at a basic level.

From the sources

The purpose of this project is to implement a simple virtual machine, capable of executing assembly code similar to ARM. I will keep it simple (so probably no operation modes, interrupt handling, etc) because I built it for educational purposes. Yet, it's powerful enough to do things like recursion (see the Fibonacci example ). Why Python? Development speed, as opposed to performance, is the key priority for this project so Python fits in perfectly. $ cat demos/function_call.s mov r1, #1 mov r2, #3 bl func1 swi #0 func1 push lr add r0, r1, r2 pop pc $ python run.py demos/function_call.s Instructions executed: 7 Instructions executed by type:…from gedrap.github.io

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
