Your first serverless Python function with OpenFaaS

In less than 10 minutes you'll have written your first Serverless function in Python with OpenFaaS & Docker Swarm and wondering what to build next.

Your first serverless Python function with OpenFaaS launched on August 13, 2017 with 7 votes, #1,175 of 3,214 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 9 years on.

What it does

Let's write a Python function with OpenFaaS that executes hello-world and then move onto something more. We'll start by deploying OpenFaaS on our machine and then we'll install the CLI and write the handler for our function. OpenFaaS is democratising serverless functions - through Docker containers. You can read my Introduction to Functions as a Service here. The CLI is a convenient way to interact with your functions. You can use it to build and/or deploy functions to your cluster. If you're using Windows, then you're not out of luck, you can actually find the Windows executable on the FaaS releases page . You can try out one of the sample functions from the Function Store. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
