Zero Width Shortener

Shorten URLs with zero-width characters

Zero Width Shortener launched on July 21, 2019 with 314 votes, #39 of 3,007 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 7 years on.

In plain words

Zero Width Shortener is a URL shortener that conceals shortened links using invisible zero-width characters instead of traditional shortened URLs. The tool makes links appear normal to humans while encoding the destination address in spaces that are imperceptible to the eye. It's designed for anyone looking for an unconventional way to share links, and works as a web app. The approach of hiding data in invisible characters is what makes this tool distinctive.

From the sources

Zero Width Shortener (abbreviated as ZWS) is a URL shortener that shortens URLs using spaces that have zero width, making them invisible to humans.

ZWS is a URL shortener which uses zero width characters to shorten URLs.

Shorten URLs with zero width characters, instead of XyGa7z . ZWS uses zero width characters instead of the typical alphanumeric ones that URL shorteners use. When rendered, these characters appear invisible, but they're still there, which means that ZWS is able to use them to encode information about your URL. Hi, I'm Jonah , the creator of ZWS. I hacked together the first version of ZWS back in 2019, mostly just to see if the concept would actually work. It turns out it did work, and since then we've shortened a few hundred thousand URLs, and handled redirects millions of times. Over time, ZWS has gone through a lot of design iterations, on both the frontend and backend. If you're curious…from zws.im

I created this a year or so ago but recently made updates and I thought people might like to know that it exists. I made this to easily send links or text to someone else verbally, like over the phone or over voice chat (which is what I made it for). The goal is to be able to tell the link to someone else without being ambiguous or needing to spell it out, so I grabbed the words off a Grade 5 level dictionary. I understand that the domain itself doesn’t qualify but I’m trying to get a better domain.

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
