Products that do what 501c3 Free Election Campaign Platform for Local Candidates does
OurSociety is a 501c3 non-profit based in NJ that developed a free campaign platform (beta) for local candidates. As a non-technical founder, I relied on outsourced development work and a team of volunteers to help drive efforts. We launched the platform in April of 2018 and today we've released our impact report of our first-year efforts: Highlights: * In 2018 77% of local candidates in New Jersey had no dedicated website or Facebook page about their campaign * 50% of candidates had no online presence at all (No personal website or Facebook) * 192 Citizen Users and 18 Candidate Users…

Heya HN, I've been working on a reddit-like platform as my primary side project for the last few years. Doing a (very) soft launch today, mainly because I want to use it to encourage discussion of alternatives. How non.io works: 1. Free to browse, paid to interact. 2. Minimum subscription is $2 (though you can choose more). I take $1 to run the servers, everything left gets split evenly between everything you upvote that month. It's a simple model, but I hope it's a better one than the freemium model we've been relying on for the last few years. Fundamentally I feel like any ad-supported…

Hey guys, So we made this site with the goal of funding a lobbyist to represent the 99%. The money comes from small pledges of $5 and up. So far we've raised nearly $10k in under a week. We're focusing fund raising efforts on causes. I'm the founder and lead developer, and I'd love to hear this community's thoughts on the project as well as answer any questions. Thanks guys! http://www.wethelobby.com/

Our little startup you've never heard of, called Vidpresso, is powering CNN's New Year's Eve social media ticker! It's a huge accomplishment for us. We're originally Utah based (our other employees are in NM and Karachi though) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bc3GdRrCUAAqLaN.jpg:large I'm posting this more out of sheer excitement than anything. I wanted to share that any startup anywhere can have exciting wins like this... regardless of whether you're in SV, went to MIT, or whatever. Just make something people want, and it'll work out. In 2014, start the thing you've been…

Hi everyone, I am organizing a crowdfunding campaign to give blankets/food/books/glasses and new year's postcards to 1000 homeless people in San Francisco. Since we as the residents already spend a lot of money on the homelessness issue in SF via government(200MM+/year), I thought some of us would be willing to take a more active role in fixing this issue by donating to campaigns like this one(and to more sustainable ones). So, I am thinking of turning this campaign into a crowdfunding platform for activists and organizations that want to work on homelessness related…

I'm currently participating in Philadelphia Startup Weekend. I successfully pitched my idea for a not for profit and we're currently hacking away on making it a reality. We are one2many.org, we foster a culture that celebrates giving & helping and that inspires people to be generous & compassionate to one another. People donate used goods to us - items like old iPhones, iPods, routers, trumpets, bunk beds, etc. - and we then give these items away to people for free, in exchange for their volunteer service participation at local organizations (Habitat for Humanity, local soup…

Hi HN! Matias and Jessica here, we're the founders of Civic (https://civicapp.co/), an online platform that connects people to causes in their area. That could mean everything from volunteering opportunities to activism and politics. Every year, over 180M Americans contribute to social causes, yet doing so takes a significant amount of time and energy — information on how to get involved or take action often spreads through disconnected pages, newsletters, and word of mouth. Civic plans to solve this by creating a hub for people to find and organize events, connect, and donate…

Y'all, I've been reading about the "nuclear option" that some internet giants are considering in order to highlight SOPA and I wondered why they didn't just put a banner saying to "Pay attention to SOPA" on their sites. I realized that it would only take a bit of time to build the service, so I did. It's built with Python, App Engine (my first time using it), Twitter's Bootstrap and GitHub. Has some rudimentary geolocating included so that politicians can be highlighted. It's a very early version (ie. I only have data for CA politicians), but I figured HN would enjoy seeing it early,…

I recently launched my first web app, polls.io. It's a super simple polling app that doesn't require sign-up. In my opinion, this is the most simple/social polling app out there. There are certainly many similar apps out there, but I think this one stands out as it straight-forward and doesn't have any unnecessary "mess" getting in the way of the actual poll. From idea to inception this took about a week. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. We'll be listening to feedback in the coming days/weeks in order to make the proper changes. I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts and feedback!…

There are times when we just can't have open and honest conversations with people about the things we're going through. Anything we say publicly gets added to our personal brand. Like bubs mentioned in this article/thread http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5270460, we can start to feel like we're alone. We don't have to be alone! Recount is a community project aimed at bettering the lives of startups everywhere, through anonymous sharing of our stories. Share your startup high-and-lows, experiences, funny / embarassing moments, things you learned, and even confessions of things you probably…
