Products that do what A web server written in plain English does

What do I mean by plain English? I mean there's no source code, no programming language. Just plain English "compiled" and CI/CDed into "production" at https://nie.avoguard.com/. Why did I build this? Just for fun. I wanted to see how close to a production-ready code can an LLM generate, and what would it take to actually take it into production. With today's technology, could an English speaker write a web server without knowing much about software engineering? See the "source plain English" for details of how detailed the instructions need to be to produce something…

As we have all seen LLMs are pretty damn good at turning natural language to code, so why are we not writing programs in English? This an experiment in compiling english "programs" to python. It is half a meme and half serious.

Hi HN, I'm new to Rust and, after half of `The Rust Programming Language` I decided to delve into a project I would actually use: a markdown to html compiler that actually serves my micro-blog (I started just right after publishing the project hehe). The project is intentionally small and one-file contained: I wanted to have the full picture in mind. I'm open to comments, suggestions and PRs. If you asked me more convincing arguments to "why did you do it?" rather than "to learn Rust" I would respond with: LLMs are effectively a new type of web users today and will be more and more present…

Hey folks, I just wanted to share a quick script I threw together called notational ls. One of the big problems of any code base (or any filesystem) is that it's hard to tell what's what - folder and file names often trade brevity for clarity. So I thought about a version of `ls` that works like this: > nls web: Where python web server files are stored ad_hoc: One time scripts ios: Our IOS code images Adding descriptions is really easy too: > nls images Images SHARED between both ios and web web: Where python web server files are stored ad_hoc: One time scripts ios: Our IOS code…

hi hn, today I'm open sourcing a new SQL-like query language that's built for the web. it has dedicated syntax for request, parsers, selectors, and javascript snippets... it was built on nodejs with the incredible moo lexer and nearley parser. if you're a fan of regular expressions, do I have some code to show you! the website is mostly just a few examples and a playground where you can write & run (& share!) your own queries. there's also an introductory blog post where i try but ultimately fail to justify why this should be its own language and not a library/framework. enjoy!

Hi there. I'm working on a programming language -- called Ink - in my spare time, with a friend. It uses LLVM for the backend, the parser and lexer are both hand written in C. The project is just for a bit of fun, we aren't trying to "revolutionize the programming language", but we're okay with being a bit quirky and out of the box with some of the syntax/features in the language. At the moment, the language is in it's early stages, and there's still a lot to do, which means that if you want to learn more about compilers, now would be a good time to start working on the language, since…

Hi HN, I have been working on a new programming language and compiler. Website: https://ironwall-lang.dev GitHub: https://github.com/3WyUFvDOdCbBw7gOZHwcfgKF/ironwall Why a new language is still needed: https://ironwall-lang.dev/en/motivation The compiler is written in TypeScript at the moment, and work on a self-hosting compiler written in Ironwall is ongoing. I would be interested in feedback. Thank you.

I created http://devtest.net as a weekend project, and I'm pretty proud of it from a technical and UI standpoint. The problem is, I've built this by myself in a bit of a vacuum, to "scratch my own itch", and I don't know if this is useful to anyone other than me. I'm also not so hot on the business side and don't really know what I'm doing. Basically, I'm looking for some advice, now that I've actually launched, what now? One thing that this has shown me is that I'm capable of putting together a pretty decent web application on my own in my spare time. Should I stick with this idea, or…

Hi HN, we’re Dylan and Matthew, building sublingual (https://github.com/sublingual-ai/sublingual), an open-source LLM observability tool you can use with zero code changes. As developers focused on iterating and building features as fast as possible, we felt observability would’ve been a helpful tool to have, but we found existing solutions had too much overhead to set up. So we gave ourselves the challenge of building an observability tool that you can integrate without changing a single line of code in your project. How it works Run your python application as usual with…

Hi HN, I'm one of the engine programmers at All Out Games (https://allout.game/), a multiplayer-first gaming UGC platform where creators can make and play games with their friends. For scripting we wanted our creators to be able to jump in and create game mechanics without having to think about networking. If a developer had to manually send packets to/from client/server to get things to happen then we have failed. It is particularly bad if you are using AI tools because they struggle to keep in mind what code is meant to run where (client, server, or both) and…

I am very new to this. I have tried to follow to follow your guidelines, but I'm not sure if I have got it right. The URL point to release notes which give a brief overview of the project including its history. As production code, this is still early stage - but I think it works well enough to be useful to people other than myself.

Hey everyone, Daniel here. I’m building an open source framework that makes it easy to code and deploy serverless applications – https://github.com/notation-dev/notation | https://notation.dev. I wanted a tool that delivers the benefits of serverless (scalable managed services), but with a first-class developer experience. Here are the main concepts: 1/ Notation provides a set of primary infrastructure resources (eg API gateway, lambda, event bridge etc) that can be composed together into serverless apps. They are fully typed, so slot into place very…

First, I'm by no mean a programmer. Second, I am reading HN for years, just registered to make this public and see if it can be useful for someone. I have nothing to gain monetary. A while ago, I decided that no blogging system was simple enough and I looked for a small wiki to use as a CMS/blog. Found WikWiki on C2.com and I mixed it with some basic Markdown syntax, a minimal template and added password protection. The result is a single php file, no database and no dependencies. Code is a mess, not modulable, probably wrong in so many ways, but it can probably used by some as personal…

Hey HN! We just launched PromptL: a templating language built to simplify writing complex prompts for LLMs like GPT-4 and Claude. Why PromptL? Creating dynamic prompts for LLMs can get tricky, even with standardized APIs that use lists of messages and settings. While these formats are consistent, building complex interactions with custom logic or branching paths can quickly become repetitive and hard to manage as prompts grow. PromptL steps in to make this simple. It allows you to define and manage LLM conversations in a readable, single-file format, with support for control flow and…
