My great-grandfather Reuben P. Box was a US Forest Ranger in Northern California, and I've got his daily work diary from 1927-1945, through the depression, WWII, Conservation Corps, and lots of forest fires. I've scanned the entire thing, had Claude help with transcription, indexing, and web site building, and put the whole thing here: https://forestrydiary.com/ This is one of those projects I've sat on for years, but with Claude and Mistral helping with the handwriting recognition, and even helping me write a custom scanning app that would auto scan each page and put it into…

A couple of months ago, I built this app to help identify people stuck under rubble. First responders have awesome tools. But in tough situations, even common folks need to help. After what happened in Myanmar, we need something like this that works properly. It has only been tested in controlled environments. It can also be improved; I know BLE is not _that_ effective under rubble. If you have any feedback or can contribute, don't hold back.

I made an alarm clock that blows up capacitors to wake you up. There are more details on the Github repo but it's made from an esp32-c3 as the microcontroller, with 3 capacitor slots. There are relays on each capacitor slot to put 15v reverse voltage on the capacitor, with 5.1 ohm resistors on each slot for current limiting in case the capacitor shorts out. I also chucked in an SSD1315 OLED to show the time and a menu to configure it, although there's a web UI as well. The esp32 also means you can fetch the time from NTP. It also functions as a small heater since I used LDOs to step down 15v…

Hey HN. I'm a high schooler in Fremont, CA. Tuesday morning I got a county-wide AC Alert text telling everyone in Alameda County to prepare a go-bag for an East Bay Hills Red Flag Warning that starts tonight at 11 PM. The text went to ~half a million phones. The actual NWS warning polygon only covers East Bay Hills (NWS zone CAZ515). Most people who got the text don't need a go-bag tonight. Some in the hills don't realize how close they are. So I built this tool - https://redflag-check.info/ mit licensed public github -…

Hi all! I'm a 17-year old self-taught developer just starting to tap into the mobile world! :3 This summer, I've worked on a minimalist distance-based alarm clock app that wakes you up before you miss your stop! Check it out here! http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/commuter-buddy/cb9b5107-41e0-4d2b-b0d6-110fe555fc3b Feedback and comments are welcome, thanks :)

I kept missing appointments and meetings because calendar notifications are too easy to ignore. Alarms, on the other hand, always break through silent mode/DND and force you to acknowledge them — but setting them manually every day was another chore. With iOS 26’s new AlarmKit, I built Beacon: it automatically syncs with your Apple Calendar and converts important events into real iOS alarms. You can define simple rules (like “only events with ‘Interview’ in the title” or “meetings with 3+ attendees”), and Beacon sets the alarms for you — no extra work required. Would love feedback!

Hi HN, I’m the creator of Alarms.Global, a free tool I built while working in logistics. I was constantly juggling scattered holiday calendars and scanning local news to figure out why shipments were delayed. What it does: Tracks public holidays in 190+ countries (so you know when offices, ports, and customs are closed) Aggregates real-time transport disruptions (strikes, port congestion, weather issues, etc.) Shows everything on a filterable world map Works in 14 languages The idea was to create a single open platform to see what might stop goods from moving today. Tech: It’s built with…
