What it does
Boston's fire alarm boxes turned into a game. Walk to one, photograph the number, claim it. You're also fixing Boston's data. 1,400+ boxes to find. A real-world scavenger hunt and civic mapping project. Boston installed the world's first municipal fire alarm telegraph in 1852, built by Dr. William F. Channing and Moses G. Farmer, more than two decades before the telephone. A lot of these boxes still work. Now you can actually see them - and help make sure the data is right.

My great-grandfather Reuben P. Box was a US Forest Ranger in Northern California, and I've got his daily work diary from 1927-1945, through the depression, WWII, Conservation Corps, and lots of forest fires. A couple of months ago, I built this app to help identify people stuck under rubble. First responders have awesome tools. But in tough situations, even common folks need to help. After what happened in Myanmar, we need something like this that works properly. It has only been tested in controlled environments. It can also be improved; I know BLE is not _that_ effective under rubble. If you have any feedback or can contribute, don't hold back.

Hey HN. I'm a high schooler in Fremont, CA. Tuesday morning I got a county-wide AC Alert text telling everyone in Alameda County to prepare a go-bag for an East Bay Hills Red Flag Warning that starts tonight at 11 PM. The text went to ~half a million phones. The actual NWS warning polygon only covers East Bay Hills (NWS zone CAZ515). Most people who got the text don't need a go-bag tonight.
