I've seen quite a few simming discussions on HN, so thought some of you might like this - I've created a map-centered, tactical submarine simulator and it's been a blast to make. I grew up playing Silent Service II on Atari ST with my dad, then got into Silent Hunter IV in the 2000s, and most recently have been loving the more recent UBoat. In each case, the part I always enjoy the most is the plotting and charting aspect - essentially beating uncertain estimates with geometry. So I decided to see how far I could get making my own sim that focused nearly entirely on that aspect. You listen…

_Vector Defense_ is a retro vector graphics style tower defense game (demo). This was a holiday "weekend" project. I wanted to recreate some of the fun I had in the past with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoDefense and one other (Android?) game that may predate GeoDefense, but which was fixed grid and placement. Creation Details I "wrote" this in English. 99% of my development came from carefully articulated directions and requests from me to Gemini 3 (usually planning mode, in Antigravity IDE). Music is also AI generated via Suno.com, from my prompts. SFX are samples…

I’m building a robot that can track nerf darts and shoot them out of the air. I’ve worked on other projects in robotics and object tracking (perception for self driving cars), but this has a whole different set of challenges. Nerf rival rounds travel at over 100 feet per second and shooting them out of the air requires aiming systems that are precise to less than half the width of a human hair and timing precision of 600 times faster than the blink of an eye. This is the first part of the series of me building the project (and my first video!) so I’d love to hear what you think!

This app was designed to answer my wife’s question “what country would we hit if we went straight” (generally posed while pointing her phone) But with two additional twists: 1. It loads up historical maps from different years (right now 1 BC, 700 AD, 1000 AD, 1300 AD, 1800 AD, 1900 AD) so you can see what you would hit if you had a time machine AND you went in the direction your phone is pointing 2. Tap a country/territory for an (AI-generated) blurb on what you are pointing at How it works: Starting from your phone’s bearing, we trace the great-circle in 200 km steps, prefilter…
