Products that do what Anthrology – Time-Traveling Radio does
Hey HN, I often wish I could go back to some year and listen to the radio as it played then, with songs that fit that time period. But not every moment is the same, and humans turn to music for various purposes. Genres feel arbitrary and limiting, so I thought it would make more sense to create stations based on a specific vibe. Are you looking for something chill or intense? Alone or with friends? Is this a dinner party, a dance floor, or winding down afterhours? So I built Anthrology as a way to navigate across time and vibes. I've been listening to it pretty much nonstop for a couple of…

This is an web audio experiment I've been wanting to do for a long time. Basically an ambient music composition, but all the sound elements are laid out in space, and that musical space can be explored freely. It's definitely inspired by in-world music that sometimes appears in games. I basically took that concept, keeping the music aspect, and dropping the entire "game" aspect. I also turned it into a more "traditional" non-interactive album, but since I started with code, why not program the whole thing? Had a blast making the entire album from code, the complete source for the album is…

I'm a big fan of the BBC podcast In Our Time -- and (like most people) I've been playing with the OpenAI APIs. In Our Time has almost 1,000 episodes on everything from Cleopatra to the evolution of teeth to plasma physics, all still available, so it's my starting point to learn about most topics. But it's not well organised. So here are the episodes sorted by library code. It's fun to explore. Web scraping is usually pretty tedious, but I found that I could send the minimised HTML to GPT-3 and get (almost) perfect JSON back: the prompt includes the Typescript definition. At the same time I…

I wanted to listen to music with friends who live far away. Not "watch a YouTube video together" - actually share what I'm hearing in real-time, like we're in the same room. Pulse is what came out of that. Anyone can host a live audio stream from their browser tab or system audio. Listeners join, music recognition identifies tracks automatically, and there's chat with 7TV emotes. No account required - you get an anonymous code and you're in. We're running demo rooms that stream NTS Radio and SomaFM 24/7 (indie project, not affiliated - we backlink to the original stations). There's also…
