Hi, I made a thing! This is by far the most work I've ever sunk into a side project; I've been working on this thing for over two years, and I'm super proud of it, even though there's still a lot more to do! Storyteller is a self-hosted platform for ebooks with synced narration. This is basically self-hosted WhisperSync, for anyone familiar with that Amazon product. It's currently made up of two self-hostable backend systems and a mobile app for reading and listening to the books it produces. Technically it uses an open spec, EPUB 3's "Media Overlay", for syncing the narration, but very few…

Hi HN, I made a tool for self-publishing authors called SelfPubKit.com. The all-in-one editor allows you to write chapters, export them to epub, pdf. You can also publish product as a standalone website with direct payments set up with your Stripe account which means you get 100% of payments minus Stripe’s fee. The idea came about when I wanted to write a short guide myself. Anyhow, let me know what you think. I’ll share tech details in the comment below.

Hi HN! I built Bookhead because I used to work as a bookseller and I wasn't happy with the software options when I decided to sell my own collection online (with the hopes of one day growing so I can open my own brick & mortar). So I decided to make my own bookselling app...a classic hacker distraction. Bookhead has two main parts: 1. an inventory management app that allows a bookseller to list their books anywhere they want to sell books (like Squarespace, Biblio, eBay, Shopify (coming soon!), etc) 2. an e-commerce platform with a CMS for selling books and letting a store control their…

I just published my first book, Means and Motive. ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GYCZJVGX ) As a software engineer, I approached writing like a software project. I used familiar tools (Emacs and HTML) for the primary writing. I built my own tool (EPublish) to transform the HTML manuscript into an .epub file, the source for the ebook version. And I wrote shell scripts to reliably and repeatably transform the .epub version into PDF files for the printed editions. I wrote 'design' and 'architecture' docs, describing the world, key actors, and timelines. I kept a task list of…

Author here. I'm a software engineer who started writing hard science fiction on the side. I built this tool because I wanted to write in plain Markdown and go straight to Amazon KDP without touching Word, InDesign, or Vellum. The workflow: I write stories in .md files, one heading per chapter, --- for scene breaks. When I'm ready to publish, I run one command and get a paperback PDF, hardcover PDF, and Kindle EPUB with correct margins, typography, and scene breaks. The tool wraps Pandoc and XeLaTeX with a custom LaTeX template and a Lua filter that handles the scene break conversion.…
