Hey there HN! I wanted to share a pet project of mine. I built HackYourNews [1] to scratch a personal itch: Knowing which stories to focus on while browsing aimlessly (though there is a certain joy in that, as well!) HackYourNews uses OpenAI's gpt-3.5-turbo to summarize the destination article as well as the comments section. Summarization of the article is always cached, while summaries of the comments are regenerated if the comments count is >10% (or >10 comments) different. I built a system that monitors ~200,000 news RSS feeds in near real-time and clusters related articles to show how stories spread across the web. It uses Snowflake’s Arctic model for embeddings and HNSW for fast similarity search. Each “story cluster” shows who published first, how fast it propagated, and how the narrative evolved as more outlets picked it up. I got tired of reading clickbait articles and seeing irrelevant ads. So I pulled in a few RSS feeds to create a news digest using OpenAI 4o-mini for summarisation. Appreciate any feedback you'all might have. PS: News-summarisation may have been done to death, but I'm a UI noob, so I'm using this project to learn some.

I built a multilingual news aggregator for European tech in 6 languages (EN, DE, FR, ES, IT, NL), filterable by audience (consumers, businesses, government) to help users discover relevant European alternatives. A few interesting technical challenges: PATTERN-BASED IMAGE GENERATION Generic AI images all look the same ("holographic businessman with laptop"). I solved this with a JSON database of 60+ concrete visual patterns—context-aware selection prevents repetition. Funding news → coins/contracts, security → locks/shields. Much more visual diversity. I decided to build my own AI feeds reader since I wanted features I couldn't find, or at least not in the way I wanted to, for instance: - Filter news by interest/category - Cluster same story from different sources into one - Show short summary of each new so you can skip if it's not really that interesting to you - Track relevant AI figures, but not only their tweets and posts but also their appearences in articles and interviews I'm still tuning it and improving it everyday.
