Hacker News with AI-generated summaries
I built this clone of Hacker News to get a quick summary of articles before deciding to read them. Summaries are cached in localStorage. Not useful for links to social media sites.
Hacker News with AI-generated summaries launched on February 18, 2025 with 19 votes, #787 of 5,999 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.
In plain words
Hacker News with AI-generated summaries is a Hacker News clone that automatically generates brief summaries of articles to help users decide whether to read them. Summaries are cached locally in the browser for quick access. The tool works best with traditional news articles and web content, though it has limitations with social media links. Users can browse Hacker News stories and get instant previews before clicking through to full articles.

Hey there HN! I wanted to share a pet project of mine. I built HackYourNews [1] to scratch a personal itch: Knowing which stories to focus on while browsing aimlessly (though there is a certain joy in that, as well!) HackYourNews uses OpenAI's gpt-3.5-turbo to summarize the destination article as well as the comments section. Summarization of the article is always cached, while summaries of the comments are regenerated if the comments count is >10% (or >10 comments) different. While I styled the homepage to welcome HNers, my preferred view is the Mobile view, accessed from the navbar. This…

It helps you quickly understand the key takeaways without reading the whole article. Plus, no login or confirmation is required to use it! Simply install the extension and click the "summary" link next to "comments" when you want to read an article. Disclaimer: Not all articles are summarised, or supported but we will change and try to support them later. Additionally, this extension is not affiliated with OpenAI or…
TL;DR2025 · tl-dr.tv · ▲199I love Hacker News but I rarely have time to read full articles / comments, so I built a simple site to summarize the top posts & comments to make it easier to get a big picture. A few implementation details: - It pulls the top stories from the HN Firebase API (`/v0/topstories`) - Filters stories with >200 points - Uses Claude Sonnet for post + comment summaries - Tries to capture the sentiment of the comments (still working on improving this) - Refreshes both posts + summaries hourly It has already helped me I hope it helps you! Please let me know if you have any feedback --…

I was at FB/Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler/runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko/plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…

i wanted to change the habit of reaching for my phone in the morning and doomscrolling away an hour so i built an app to help me. now i have to literally touch grass before accessing my most distracting apps the app is built in swiftui, uses the screen time apis provided by apple and google vision to recognise grass or not i'd love to get your thoughts on the concept.
